The usage
of contract research and Clinical or Contact Research Organizations (CROs) by
pharmaceutical companies, biotech and alike is expected to grow continuously.
More and more services are, depending on the size of the company, outsourced to
CROs. For instance since not all aspects of clinical trials can be covered or
there is a lack of resources or maybe in expertise in some areas. There are so
many CROs around to outsource to, so what’s important in selecting the right
CRO?
Certainly,
the quality of the CROs work as witnessed by others in the therapeutic area of
interest is an important criterion. The CROs ability to build successful long
term relation with the sponsor and investigational sites on the other hand is
important too. It is common sense that there has to be a feeling of
understanding; a good feeling that the cooperation between the sponsor and the
CRO will work. It would be favorable if
the approach, the values and the work ethics of both companies are similar.
To achieve
that feeling of understanding any CRO should offer a very cohesive and devoted
team lead by clinical project managers with the required expertise to give an
idea how exactly the clinical project will be carried out. Problem solving
capabilities of a contract research organization are generally enhanced if an
organization and the CRO’s team have a good team spirit and exhibit low staff
turnover.
If the CRO
of choice has all the above qualities and serves in the right areas, the choice
maybe right indeed.
